Carolus' map was published more often, travelled further and was used as a model by others far longer than any of the other maps from that period.
Dutchman Carolus devoted his life to travelling, sailing and mapmaking and he left behind him a number of maps of northern Europe. His furthest expedition north reached Spitzbergen. In his youth he was a soldier and he lost a leg at the siege of Ostende and used a wooden leg for the remainder of his life. His friend the Icelander Jón Guðmundsson always referred to him as "Master Juris Peg-leg."
Actual size of map: 55 x 48 cm.
