The Icelandic Yuletide Lads
The story of the Icelandic Yulemen (jólasveinar) has been with Icelanders for a long time. Also their parents, the trolls Grýla and Leppalúði, but they snatched children and ate them. They are all a part of Icelandic tradition. Nobody knows exactly how they came into being.
On the night of the 12th of December all Icelandic children, who belives in Santa Clause, puts their shoes out in the window because this is the night when the first lad comes from their mountain dwelling. Then the Yulelads come one by one each night. The first to arrive is Sheep-Cot Clod and he leaves again on Christmas day. Other Yulelads are; Gully Gawk, Shorty, Ladle Licker, Pot Scraper, Bowl Licker, Door Slammer, Skyr Gobbler, Sausage Swiper, Window Peeper, Door Sniffer, Meat Hook.
